Digital Forensic Officer

A strategic alliance has been formed between Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police in order to enable both forces to meet the challenge of reducing policing budgets. By working more closely together the forces will benefit from greater operational and organisational resilience, making us the fourth largest geographic police area in England and Wales. 

The main purpose of the role is to conduct forensic examinations of digital devices including the retrieval, enhancement and analysis of digital data from image capture systems, such as digital and analogue CCTV recording systems with an emphasis on triage, imaging files and primary evidence reporting in support of criminal investigations.    

To assist the Digital Forensic unit in providing a quality, high specification analytical and evidential service for the stakeholders of Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police, relating to serious offences, which can robustly stand up to scrutiny of the legal profession and ensuring that ISO 17025 standards are maintained and adhered to.  

Main Responsibilities:

Secure, retrieve and examine data from digital devices and CCTV systems, in accordance with national guidelines, ISO 17025, forensic principles and legislation. Utilise proprietary and bespoke software to carry out the task, ensuring integrity and continuity of items by correct handling, storage and documentation.

Advise officers with regards to the handling, evidencing, interrogating and analysis of mobile communication devices across all criminal investigations using e-mail, telephone and face to face contact.

Develop and implement manual and computerised systems to ensure that requests for services are correctly documented and prioritised, ensuring that continuity and integrity are preserved whilst supplying accurate and timely responses.

Conduct physical examinations of submitted items to include disassembly, reassembly, forensic triage and acquisition of data to the server, in accordance with organisational requirements, ISO17025, health and safety, best practice, legal and national guidelines.

Process and examine the recovered data and produce the resulting information in a detailed and accurate report and streamline forensic report witness statements that maintain the integrity of the evidence. If required attend court to give this evidence and withstand scrutiny as an expert.

Ensure that all systems and processes operate in compliance with relevant legislation, i.e. The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, The Police & Criminal Evidence Act 1984, The Data Protection Act 1998, The Freedom of Information Act 2000 and The European Convention on Human Rights.

Provide training and technical advice to departmental staff and other members of the Force to improve their knowledge of digital evidence data as an investigative tool.

Make best use of technology, including but not limited to ADF, EnCase FTK, XRY, and Cellebrite. Conduct forensic processing of acquired data.

To participate in the Peer review process and to actively review feedback following a Peer review to ensure a high standard of quality assurance, integrity and continuity is observed.

To undertake other duties commensurate with the nature, level of responsibility and grading of this post, as required. 

Experience/Skills:

Degree in information and communication technology or equivalent. Or technical experience in fields such as digital forensics, electronics, or mobile telecommunication networks. 

Experience of collecting and analysing information to select the pertinent facts and arrive at a timely and considered conclusion.

Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills.

Ability to work with meticulous attention to detail whilst under tight deadlines.

Ability to work as part of a team and also to work alone with minimum supervision using your own initiative.

Demonstrate excellent time management and organisational skills.

Deal professionally with a variety of issues in an environment that demands confidentiality.

Resilience to deal with images and materials of an unpleasant and distressing nature stored on the devices being examined.

Commitment to adapting and developing quality standards within the workplace.

Special Conditions

Regular travel throughout the Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police areas.

There will be a requirement to provide biometric samples for inclusion on the police elimination databases.

Exposure to disturbing/unpleasant images or tasks.

Mandatory training courses. There will be a requirement to pay back all or part of the training costs if the candidate leaves within three years
